I made the comment on my weeklyish whiteboard last week - I was supposed to take November off and work on some new material. Then a couple of Saskatoon shows popped into my schedule.
Still running that "Open Mic" circuit, but that's not unexpected. It's all part of building out my brand and awareness of what I'm doing.
First, I suppose I should let you know how I did with the Telemiracle audition. First, some practical advice. It never hurts to stop for a minute before you start something and make sure you know what you're doing. I did it that Saturday morning, stopped and double checked where the audition was being held. And I'm glad I did because I was going to head to the wrong venue. But with the correct address in hand, I headed to the Regina Kinsmen Hall and performed a couple of songs before a panel of four kind people who heard me out and asked some great questions about my music and my audience. I felt very relaxed and prepared for the audition, and I think I did really well. I should have word in the next 2 weeks or so about it.
Last week was a double trip up to Saskatoon. On Tuesday, I went to the Bloom Entertainment Open Mic at Paved Arts. I was very excited for this open mic because I got to cross paths with Aria Swanson, with who I played with at the Open Mic in Moose Jaw earlier this year and Martina, with whom I did a consult through SaskMusic last month. The organizers, Saul and Corey of Bloom Entertainment, are great guys, and there was a definite cool vibe there that night. Maybe the most interesting comment that night was from one of the Bloom guys who noted how strong my branding is. I'm glad someone noticed, it's, of course, something I work hard on. It's nice when it's noticed!
Perhaps most memorable from that night was the Northern Lights show I saw on the drive home. It was the reddest I've ever seen them. When I was pulling into Chamberlain, the whole sky turned red - even though I was headed south!
On Friday, I headed back up to Saskatoon, this time with Ronny Garrett from Saskatchewan Nights Live in the passenger seat. Ronny is a man with many big ideas, so the trip was full of discussion and idea sharing. The show let me have my debut on the Art Bar stage, a great venue, just up the street from where I played on Tuesday. We had a few comics on stage, and I got a chance to play a good set.
Completely unrelated to music, the Saskatchewan Roughriders won the Grey Cup this weekend, so I've been in a particularly good mood this month!
And so that brings us up to today. I've been asked to head over to the O'Hanlon's open mic tonight, so I'll probably go strum a couple of songs there. And on Sunday, November 30, I'm headed to Indian Head to play an Open Mic at the Gallery Coffee House. Then into December for what I expect will be another busy month!
