From zero to sixty
No sooner had I posted my last blog than my week suddenly filled with rehearsals!
It started that same day with my sister texting to ask if I could accompany her flute playing at our grandmother’s internment. We lost her at the ripe old age of 99 earlier this year, and we’re gathering again this weekend to lay her to her final rest.
It’s a really interesting group of songs that we’ve been asked to perform. There’s the expected spiritual hymns, but there’s also a lot of really old classic folk songs, some songs from the WWII era, and we’ve even snuck an Elvis song in there. I’m pretty excited to learn these songs and maybe even add a couple of them to my repertoire.
I also got a text yesterday from my friend Niel Childs, looking for someone who could pitch in next Monday at Jazz and Blues night over at Bushwakker Brewpub in Regina. So if you’re free next Monday night, come check out some great tunes and have a beverage!
Niel sounds a bit nervous about the gig. He prides himself on being a folkster, so playing blues and jazz is a bit of a stretch. I’ve got a lot of basis in both jazz and blues and it comes out in the music I write. I’m more nervous that my songs include a LOT of genres in them and it might not be pure enough for the night. But I think it’ll be fine.
I’ve got feelers out on a few more gigs so who knows, I might be posting here again with more in the coming days!
